Difference Between 304 SS Casting and 316SS Casting Parts

Chemical composition

The main components of 304 stainless steel include chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni), with chromium content typically ranging from 18% to 20% and nickel content from 8% to 10.5%. 316 stainless steel adds 2%-3% molybdenum (Mo) to 304, which makes it more resistant to corrosion in certain environments ‌.


Corrosion resistance

304 stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance and can resist the corrosion of most oxidizing acids and alkalis. However, in environments containing chloride ions, such as seawater or certain chemicals, its resistance to corrosion may be affected, and rusting or corrosion may occur ‌. In contrast, 316 stainless steel has significantly improved resistance to chloride corrosion due to the addition of molybdenum, and is particularly suitable for Marine environments or situations where exposure to corrosive chemicals is required ‌.


Mechanical performance

304 stainless steel has good mechanical property and welding performance, can absorb a certain amount of mechanical stress, suitable for most of the welding process, including electric arc welding, TIG welding, MIG welding, etc. Meanwhile, 304 stainless steel performs well in cold working and can be formed into complex shapes through cold rolling, cold bending, stamping and other processes ‌.316 stainless steel, while maintaining these basic properties, has improved heat resistance and high-temperature strength due to its higher nickel content and the addition of molybdenum, making it particularly suitable for manufacturing equipment in high-temperature environments ‌.
